Here’s the bad news: we’re nearing the end of summer and Labor Day is less than two weeks away. But the good news is you still have a chance to have some good old-fashioned summertime fun in ways that won’t break your bank. Here are our eight favorite options:
1) Take a cheap vacation
Think it’s impossible to find vacation deals this late in the game? Think again. Websites like Expedia, Priceline and Trip Advisor – to name just a few – will help you find great places to stay at the best rates available.
2) Spend the day at the beach
Nothing beats the magical combination of sun, sand, waves, family, and friends. And all of it is free!
3) Light up the backyard barbecue
Americans love to grill, and nothing beats the summer season as the time to do it. To lower costs, invite friends and family for a potluck!
4) Visit a National Park
Summer is the busiest time of year for National Park visits, but you can cut down on the crowds – and the traffic – by waking up early and finding the perfect spot to watch the sunrise.
5) Take in an outdoor concert
Summer’s twilight hours are truly amazing times to watch concerts in outdoor venues. You can find numerous shows – some of them free – by looking at the Friday section of your newspaper or by checking out online sites devoted to listing activities and festivals in your area.
6) Develop your green thumb
Got an unused backyard spot that catches sunlight? The end of summer is a great time to start a garden and grow your favorite fruits, vegetables, flowers, or herbs.
7) Throw that garage sale you’ve been postponing
You’ve been putting off that garage sale for months, even years; now is the perfect time to take advantage of the many people strolling around your neighborhood, the perfect time to get rid of your clutter, and a great way to perhaps make some extra money.
8) Whatever the activity, remember to enjoy the late 2015 summer season – before it is gone for good
Last, but certainly not least, is our recommendation that whatever activity you choose, you unplug your electronics, breathe deeply and enjoy. All too often, we are so focused on an activity that we forget that the whole point of relaxing, especially during the summer, is to relax. We urge you to simply get outside and enjoy this summer, before it’s gone for good.
We hope you’ve enjoyed this list of low-cost, fun summertime activities, and that you find genuine pleasure in the remaining summer days ahead. That said, if financial worries are consistently troubling you – weighing down your thoughts and your state of mind – we encourage you to call J.G.
