Five Ways to Celebrate Halloween – without Putting a Scare in Your Wallet

We’re less than four weeks away from Halloween – one of J.G. Wentworth’s favorite holidays – and if you think you have to spend lots of money to truly enjoy the day, we’d like to scare you straight! Here are five ways to celebrate Halloween without breaking the bank.

1) Make your costume

While most folks celebrate Halloween by wearing store-bought costumes, we like the old-fashioned, Do-It Yourself approach of making costumes at home. So roundup old cardboard boxes and egg cartons, construction paper, scissors, glue, and paint, and with a little imagination you can create a great costume at a fraction of the price.

2) Create your own haunted house

Think you need cool gadgets and expensive sound and lighting effects to make a great haunted house? Think again. The list of low-cost items you can use to make a spooky haunted house include candles, computer-made sound effects, glow-in-the-dark paint, dry ice, wax, and straw. Make your house the coolest on the block!

3) Visit the dollar store

Now is the time that dollar stores begin to pack their shelves with Halloween-related decorations and candy. You’ll spend a fraction of the amount of money shopping at these stores than you would elsewhere.

4) Partner up with other families on the block for food and festivities

Bulk stores like Costco and Sam’s Club offer substantial discounts for enormous bags of candy, the cost of which you can divide up evenly between several families. You can also join with other families to create a terrific Halloween themed block party that can become the talk of the neighborhood.

5) Shop ahead for next year

Last but certainly not least is our recommendation that your planning should include shopping ahead for next year’s Halloween. Why? Because the day after Halloween is when stores begin offering tremendous savings on all their overstocked costumes and other Halloween-related items. Markdowns can be as much as 50% to 80%!

We hope this list of five ways to celebrate Halloween on a budget will help you plan a spooky, fun-filled, and low-cost holiday.
